back to reality
Hi Everyone! Yes I’m back from the dead. Actually I’m back from my summer holiday in Italy. I took time off after my student finished her practicum in the lab. It was a much needed rest because I was on the verge of a burnout. The lack of personal time plus having to think for two people has really taken its toll on me.
I didn’t really spend 2 whole weeks in Italy, It was actually just 9 days. Four of those I spent in Lignano, where Francesco and his friends’ rented apartment is. Lignano’s a beach town in north east Italy. I was tempted to walk around with an umbrella because the Filipino in me dictates it but in Italy I’d look like a fool if I did so. So I ignored myr urge to stay in the shade, lathered myself with lots of sunscreen, and headed for the beach. Yes, I even got over some of my fear of sharks to go dip myself in the water (hanggang bewang nga lang after that panic kicks in). It was not Boracay by all means. The sand was gold (Sabbia d’Oro or sand of gold is actually appended to Lignano). There were no bars by the beach (walang FRIDAYS sign na pwedeng Kodak-an). But it was a great place to just relax and appreciate the fact that I wasn’t in Saarbruecken and that my skin was getting a healthy dose of humidity.
The other 5 days I spent with Francesco mostly in Udine where he works. I got to sit through his German and English classes. I even got to participate in the speaking session. He teaches students as young as 12 and as old as 67. He’s a bit of a perfectionist with regards to languages (He even corrects my English every so often). But yeah he’s good at what he does. I’m glad that he’s found what he liked to do and that he’ll be taking his 2nd degree to be able to have the credentials to teach in the university.
So now I’m working again in the lab. Actually it’s just been 2 days, but they were two very hectic days. I had to write my progress report plus I had to write about this new stuff that my supervisor discovered during my vacation. It’s all hush hush as of now because well let’s just say I might be the first person to determine how bacteria makes this known antibiotic. I have 2 big biosynthesis projects now. It would be great having to get out of having to look for compounds and just settling for a couple. My boss said two biosynthesis would be enough for my Ph.D. work. Ok for the uninformed it might look easy but seriously, it’s going to involve a lot of hard work. You see bacteria don’t always do what you want them to do. It’s like they have a brain. I have now resorted to shouting to an agar plate “Give me clones!!!”. Apparently that technique worked well with one of the junior professors when he was doing his Ph.D.
